This week in art class

Kindergarten: After learning the primary and secondary colors and a little about the color wheel, we began work on learning/reviewing how to paint. I demonstrated how to use a paint brush, wash between colors, and paint properly. The students then received a "practice painting" sheet. After painting the primary colors, I showed the students how to mix the secondary colors and then paint them on their paper.

1st Grade: We began a new project this week. We will be creating a clay butterfly by using specific clay methods and design. This week I read a few books to the students about the different types of butterflies, and then I demonstrated how to draw a butterfly while the students followed along. After drawing their butterflies the students designed their wings remembering that the wings are symmetrical.

2nd Grade: This week I introduced the students to their new project, Self-Portraits inspired by the artist Matisse. I read the students the biography of Matisse and we looked at a few of his most famous artworks. I then instructed the students on how to draw a self-portrait step by step as they followed along in their sketchbooks.

3rd Grade: In art this week, we began our newest project on recycling. Students will be creating a sculpture made from materials that could be recycled. This week, I read a book on recycling, and then showed the students different images of sculptures made from recyclable material and discussed ideas for our own sculptures. We then discussed the history of trash, and then did a group activity on Reusing, Recycling, and Reducing trash.

4th Grade: We began work on our clay project for the year this week. Students will be creating a pot made from coils and then design it based on Greek pottery designs. I began by showing a powerpoint on Greek pottery forms and on the designs the Greeks used on their pots. The students then sketched 2 to 3 different pots with various designs.

5th Grade: This week, the students began learning about perspective drawing. I presented a powerpoint on the terms associated with perspective, and then as a class we practiced drawing boxes using one-point perspective.
