Grades in Art Class Will be Changing!

After break, the behavior grade that is given in art class each week will be changing slightly. It will become a mix between participation and behavior in class. Also every student will start out with an "S" for this grade as participating in classroom activities and following classroom rules is expected. Students may achieve an "O" if they go above and beyond classroom expectations and perform exemplary during activities. On the flip side, students who choose to not participate or behave appropriately in art class will earn the grade "N".

Behavior will not be assessed on a project grade, however, if a student is not participating or following classroom rules while they are in art class the quality of their work is likely to be lower than that of students following classroom procedures properly.

Just a reminder that an "O" is outstanding and counts as a 95% in Power School, a "S" is satisfactory and counts as a 80%, a "N" is not satisfactory and counts as a 65%, and a U is Unsatisfactory and counts as a 50%. I do not assign the percentages, it is an automatic calculation by Power School. I enter the letter given to the project and the percentage is assigned.

If there are any questions, please do not hesitate to email or call!

Happy Holidays!!! =)

Merry Christmas!

It's that time of year! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I will see everyone after break!

What we are up to in Art Class

Kindergarten: We will be finishing up our unit on the color wheel this week. AFter painting a color wheel using mixed colors, the students added paper to turn their color wheels into clowns. Look for pictures of these awesome creations coming soon!

1st Grade: Last week the students learned how to use glaze, the special paint for clay, and applied it appropriately to their clay butterflies. The students had to use problem solving skills in order to find the color they wanted. First they had to look on the glaze example board to find the right color then match the name of that glaze to the jar that held the color they wanted. We will finish glazing the butterflies this week and they will then go into the kiln for a final glaze-fire.

2nd Grade: We have been hard at work creating Wild Beast self-portraits in the style of the artist, Henri Matisse. The students first learned how to draw a self-portrait and then filled their self-portrait with wild and crazy colors. Lastly the students added paper-cut outs to their portraits as Matisse did in his later years.

3rd Grade: The third graders are working on a recycling project. The students have taken recyclable materials and created sculptures out of them. Last week the students began to papier-mache their sculptures in order to add strength and stability. It is a very messy, fun process and the students are really enjoying it!

4th Grade: I am so impressed with the fourth graders and their hard work so far! We have been hard at work on our coil pots created from Indian Red Clay. The students have to build a pot using rolled coils, and I am impressed with their hard work and creativity! The pots are coming along wonderfully, and I will be adding pictures to show their progress.

5th Grade: The fifth graders have been working very hard to learn the process of drawing in one-point perspective. The students are working on drawing a city in a bird's eye view, and I'm excited with how they are coming along!

I am constantly reminded why I am an art teacher when I see the creativity coming out of my students. They are always amazing me with what they are capable of, and I can not wait to see what will come throughout this year!

This week in art class

Kindergarten: After learning the primary and secondary colors and a little about the color wheel, we began work on learning/reviewing how to paint. I demonstrated how to use a paint brush, wash between colors, and paint properly. The students then received a "practice painting" sheet. After painting the primary colors, I showed the students how to mix the secondary colors and then paint them on their paper.

1st Grade: We began a new project this week. We will be creating a clay butterfly by using specific clay methods and design. This week I read a few books to the students about the different types of butterflies, and then I demonstrated how to draw a butterfly while the students followed along. After drawing their butterflies the students designed their wings remembering that the wings are symmetrical.

2nd Grade: This week I introduced the students to their new project, Self-Portraits inspired by the artist Matisse. I read the students the biography of Matisse and we looked at a few of his most famous artworks. I then instructed the students on how to draw a self-portrait step by step as they followed along in their sketchbooks.

3rd Grade: In art this week, we began our newest project on recycling. Students will be creating a sculpture made from materials that could be recycled. This week, I read a book on recycling, and then showed the students different images of sculptures made from recyclable material and discussed ideas for our own sculptures. We then discussed the history of trash, and then did a group activity on Reusing, Recycling, and Reducing trash.

4th Grade: We began work on our clay project for the year this week. Students will be creating a pot made from coils and then design it based on Greek pottery designs. I began by showing a powerpoint on Greek pottery forms and on the designs the Greeks used on their pots. The students then sketched 2 to 3 different pots with various designs.

5th Grade: This week, the students began learning about perspective drawing. I presented a powerpoint on the terms associated with perspective, and then as a class we practiced drawing boxes using one-point perspective.

This Week in Art Class

Just a little update on what we're working on this week...

Kindergarten: This week we are working on adding hair and textures to our self-portraits.

1st Grade: This week the students are adding oil pastel designs onto their watercolors paintings to enhance the details they originally drew.

2nd Grade: This week students will add dot and line designs to their paintings to really show the Aboriginal ideas they are implicating

3rd Grade: This week the students are adding their flowers and painting all their details with a paintbrush.

4th Grade: This week the students are working on finishing their tessellation drawing, and then adding color.

5th Grade: This week the students are finishing up their still-life sketch, and then adding value changes with colored pencils

The art show is quickly approaching and we are working as hard as we can to get our artwork done!!! Don't forget to R.S.V.P. so that your child's artwork can be displayed with their class! Remember, by sending in your R.S.V.P. you are NOT buying a frame, you are guarantying a spot for your child in the art show. Please R.S.V.P!!!!

Important Art Show Information

Parents please note that even if you don't plan on purchasing a frame at the art show, you still need to R.S.V.P. so your student's artwork can be displayed. If you do not R.S.V.P. your student's artwork will not be framed and put out with the rest of their class! This event will be a great self-esteem booster for your child. Seeing that their artwork is important enough to be out on display with their class is a great experience! =) Thanks!

This week in Art Class...

Here's what we've worked on this week in art class:

Kindergarten-This week we started our artwork for the art show (October 6th!). The students filled in the background of their white paper by using texture plates and crayons. After this, the students were given skin color paper, drew the shape of their face, cut it out and glued it onto their paper.

1st Grade- This week the students finished up drawing their landscape painting inspired by Starry Night by Van Gogh. Also some classes began painting their landscape with watercolors.

2nd Grade- This week the students finished up drawing their Aboriginal inspired artwork on their white paper. We discussed painting procedures and the students learned how to pump their own paint from th paint jugs. Some students then began to paint their artwork.

3rd Grade- This week the students finished up drawing their landscape garden scenes inspired by Monet. I then reviewed painting procedures with the students, and discussed sponge-painting techniques with them. Some students then began to paint their garden scene.

4th Grade-This week has been challenging for the students, but all made it through! We finished designing our polygons that we will create our tessellation with, and the students then began to draw a grid on their white paper. After the grid was complete, students began to trace their polygon onto their paper using the grid.

5th Grade- This week, we began drawing our fruit still-life on good white paper. The students were challenged to draw a group of objects from life, and I was VERY impressed with the students' work!

More to come next week! =)

Grades in Art Class

Grading in specials is different than in the regular classroom. I give grades based on the O-S-N-U system. O is Outstanding and represents a 95%, S is Satisfactory and represents an 80%, N is Not Satisfactory and represents a 65%, and U is Unsatisfactory and represents a 55%. PowerSchool has assigned each letter to a percentage, and as I enter letter grades, they are averaged together for a final percentage. I can not change or put in any percentage, it is strickly an O, S, N, or a U when I put grades in. Larger projects in art class are graded with a rubric that are sent home with the artwork, please refer to these when looking at your child's grades. These still will be using the O-S-N-U grading scale.

I also give weekly behavior grades. If a student comes to art class and does everything they are asked to and does not have a behavior problem, they receive an O. If a student breaks one of our classroom promises (discussed the first week of school and includes not talking while the teacher is talking, not throwing or using art materials innapropriately, showing respect to the teacher and classmates, etc.) they will receive an N and be sent to the "Thinking Corner" to think about their actions. If they behave innapropriately a second time, they will receive a U and be sent to the office. By enforcing the promises of the art room, I can establish a safe learning environment for all students.

If you have any questions about grading, please contact me. =)

Art Fair is Coming!

Art Fair is quickly approaching!! On October 6th from 6:30-8:00, in the Brown Cafeteria, there will be an art show of all the student's artwork from Brown Elementary. We have been busy in the art room preparing for the art show, creating artwork inspired by Monet, Van Gogh, Tessellation designs, still-life, shapes, and Aboriginal art.

Over the next few weeks, flyers will be sent home detailing the event. Attached to these flyers are RSVP cards that need to be filled out and sent back to school if you want your child's artwork to be framed and showcased at the event. Only one RSVP per child is needed. All student's that have brought back an RSVP card will have their artwork framed and displayed with their class on October 6th. At the event, parents and guardians will have the opportunity to purchase the frame that holds their child's artwork for $29.99 plus tax. 20% of all proceeds will come right back to our school. Please do not send money to school for the frame. All purchases should be made at the Art Fair. If you choose not to purchase a frame, your child's artwork will be given back to the student a few weeks after the event to take home.

If you have any questions about Brown Elementary's Art Fair please email or call me (Mrs. Conner, Brown's art teacher).

Goooood Morning!

In art this year, I will be having an Art Star of the Month for each month we are in school. To become the "art star" students first have to be given an art ticket (you get an art ticket when you have done something extra-ordinary like helping someone in need, assisting me, doing some amazing artwork, etc.). All students who receive an art ticket will be placed in a drawing. At the end of each month, I will be drawing a name out and that student will be the "art star"! Art stars will be given an art certificate, have their name put on my bulliten board that is specifically for the art star, have an email or call home, and be given an art prize. Good luck to all students!!! =)

Let's Get This Year Started!

Good Morning! Starting now, I will be updating my blog weekly to keep everyone updated on what projects each grade is working on. I'm working on getting pictures attached to the blog to show the student's work as well, so keep your eyes out for that. As for now here is what everyone is working on currently:

Kindergarten- We are making collage self-portraits for our first project. Last week, we discussed shapes and looked at images to find shapes within them. This week we are going to be starting on our self portrait. First we will discuss the various shapes we see in our face (the students will be looking into mirrors) and then draw and cut those shapes out of the appropriate colors of paper. Hopefully we will get through all of the features of the face this week!

1st Grade- For first grade, we are creating a landscape painting based on Van Gogh's Starry Night. Last week we learned about the life and art work of Vincent Van Gogh, and discussed Starry Night. I asked the students what they saw in the painting, and we talked about his painting style impressionism.
We discussed what a landscape was and I demonstrated how to draw each component of a landscape. Then the students then practiced drawing a landscape in their sketchbooks, adding details and characteristics from Van Gogh's Starry Night.

2nd Grade- For the first project in 2nd grade, the students are creating an artwork based on Aboriginal art from Australia. Last week, I introduced the students the this type of art, and we discussed the similarities and differences we saw in artwork from our country and art done by the Aboriginees. The students then decided what they would want in their own artwork done in the Aboriginal style. The students sketched their ideas, and added designs and patterns.

3rd Grade- The first project in 3rd grade is a painting inspired by Claude Monet. Last week we learned about him and his interesting painting style. We looked at a few examples of his paintings and discussed what we saw in them. The students then reviewed the characteristics of a landscape painting, and they followed my demonstration of drawing a garden landscape in their sketchbooks. We added different garden items like a pond, path, bridge, flowers, greenery, etc.

4th Grade- To start the year off in 4th grade, we are creating tessellations. A tessellation is a design and is made of repeated shapes called polygons. Last week, we talked about Tessellations and learned that tessellations are found all over the world, and all around us. I then showed the students how to make a unique polygon shape that we will use to create our tessellation.

5th Grade- In 5th grade this year, our concentration will be drawing from life. To begin, we are going to be doing a still-life drawing of fruit. Last week, we did a warm up drawing excercise. The students learned how to draw a sphere by going through a hand out step by step. The students then drew the sphere in their sketchbooks.

More coming next week! =)
