Freaky Friday!

It's been a freeeeeaky Friday today! On Fridays here in the art room the students have "art centers" available to choose from.

Computer center: Students can paint on the computer, they can also choose from a variety of interactive art websites to explore, and they can also choose to discover the Mystery Museum while solving cases of missing artwork.

Painting Center: Students can create watercolor paintings, and can try out the watercolor pencils.

Sculpture Center: Students can create sculptures from the red modeling clay. While this clay is perfectly fine to use in the art room, it must stay here and not be taken home. Because of this I take lots of pictures of the creations and post them on here! Also at the sculpture center is jewelry making. Students can create one piece of jewelry using different beads and string.

Paper Center: At this center, students can draw, create collages, use sharpies, markers, texture plates, scrap paper, etc.

I like to let the students have the opportunity to be able to explore all the mediums that the art room has to offer, and art centers is perfect for that. It is almost like a "free" day where the students are in charge of their own projects.

Have a fantastic weekend! =)

Back To School

The time has come for school to begin once again. We have started the year off in art class by reviewing the class rules along with consequences and rewards. We also reviewed our procedures for the art room. It has been decided from Central Office that there will no longer be grades for participation or behavior in specials this year, and so the only grades students will receive are for artwork and sketchbook drawings. Because there are no longer grades for behavior or participation, my behavior plan for the art room has changed only slightly for this year.

If you have any questions about this behavior plan please call or email me!

Art Room Behavior Plan: If a student breaks a classroom rule or is disruptive, they will receive a verbal warning. If that student breaks a rule again or is disruptive a second time they will put their name on a "Not Satisfactory" ticket which will be placed in my classroom folder. When I see that student again for art whether it be on a Freaky Friday or the following week in art class and they again have to put their name on a "Not Satisfactory" ticket, it will result in a phone call home. I have explained this to all of my classes and continue to remind students every time I see then of the rules and the consequences.

Students also have the opportunity to earn "Art Tickets" for exemplary behavior and participation and those tickets are placed in a monthly drawing for my "Art Star" award. Students who have earned these tickets also win a small prize from the prize jar.

We will be starting off the year with an "Art to Remember" fundraiser. Information will be coming soon on this exciting fundraiser! The projects the students will be working on are as follows:

Kindergarten: Self-Portraits
1st Grade: Vincent Van Gogh "Starry Night" paintings
2nd Grade: Henri Matisse inspired "wild beast" self-portraits
3rd Grade: Claude Monet inspired garden landscapes
4th Grade: Robert Indiana inspired word designs
5th Grade: Egyptian Funeral Mask self-portraits

It's going to be a fun and exciting year!
