Art Club Information!
Art Club Information
Art Club will be a group of 10 5th graders who are seeking additional art lessons to prepare for future artistic endeavors. There will be two “rounds” of art club, one for the fall semester and one for the spring semester, so there will be a total of 20 students selected. In Art Club, students will focus on drawing from life, throwing pottery on the wheel, working with color theory, and creating an Art Journal.
Art Club will take place on Tuesday afternoons right after school until 4:45 in the art room (room 103). Students will need to have their own transportation home at 4:45. Fall semester art club will begin October 5 and continue until December 21. Spring semester Art Club will begin January 11 and go thru April 5 (of course the Tuesday over Spring Break will be skipped and our last day will be the following Tuesday).
Completed permission slips are due no later than Monday, September 27. Once I receive all interested student’s permission slips back, I will put those student’s names into a pot and draw 20 names out. Those 20 students will then be notified that they have been selected and also which semester of Art Club they will be assigned to. Students who are not selected will also be notified that all the Art Club spots have been filled.

Freaky Friday!
Computer center: Students can paint on the computer, they can also choose from a variety of interactive art websites to explore, and they can also choose to discover the Mystery Museum while solving cases of missing artwork.
Painting Center: Students can create watercolor paintings, and can try out the watercolor pencils.
Sculpture Center: Students can create sculptures from the red modeling clay. While this clay is perfectly fine to use in the art room, it must stay here and not be taken home. Because of this I take lots of pictures of the creations and post them on here! Also at the sculpture center is jewelry making. Students can create one piece of jewelry using different beads and string.
Paper Center: At this center, students can draw, create collages, use sharpies, markers, texture plates, scrap paper, etc.
I like to let the students have the opportunity to be able to explore all the mediums that the art room has to offer, and art centers is perfect for that. It is almost like a "free" day where the students are in charge of their own projects.
Have a fantastic weekend! =)

Back To School
If you have any questions about this behavior plan please call or email me!

Art Room Behavior Plan: If a student breaks a classroom rule or is disruptive, they will receive a verbal warning. If that student breaks a rule again or is disruptive a second time they will put their name on a "Not Satisfactory" ticket which will be placed in my classroom folder. When I see that student again for art whether it be on a Freaky Friday or the following week in art class and they again have to put their name on a "Not Satisfactory" ticket, it will result in a phone call home. I have explained this to all of my classes and continue to remind students every time I see then of the rules and the consequences.
Students also have the opportunity to earn "Art Tickets" for exemplary behavior and participation and those tickets are placed in a monthly drawing for my "Art Star" award. Students who have earned these tickets also win a small prize from the prize jar.
We will be starting off the year with an "Art to Remember" fundraiser. Information will be coming soon on this exciting fundraiser! The projects the students will be working on are as follows:
Kindergarten: Self-Portraits
1st Grade: Vincent Van Gogh "Starry Night" paintings
2nd Grade: Henri Matisse inspired "wild beast" self-portraits
3rd Grade: Claude Monet inspired garden landscapes
4th Grade: Robert Indiana inspired word designs
5th Grade: Egyptian Funeral Mask self-portraits
It's going to be a fun and exciting year!

Art Room Update
Kindergarten: The Kindergartners are learning about the Chinese culture, focusing on the celebration of the New Year. I introduced the students to the Chinese culture and the New Year celebration by reading a book. We then learned how to draw a tiger because it is the year of the Tiger in China this year. We then further discussed the dragon dance that is performed for the celebration and the students were taught how to draw a dragon. I then showed the students how to create a paper lantern for the lantern festival. The students will be decorating their lanterns and will be watching a video about the lantern festival in China.
1st Grade: The first graders just completed their Color Wheel Clown project and will be learning about Japan this week. They will be learning about Gyotaku printing and about the Sumi-E painting style.
2nd Grade: The second graders just finished working on their jungle collages inspired by Henri Rousseau (pictures are up) and will be starting on their clay project this week. They will be researching birds and then creating a nest, bird, and eggs out of clay.
3rd Grade: Currently the third graders are in the middle of their clay project. The students learned about Edgar Degas and his sculpture of a ballet dancer called "Little Dancer, Age 14". They then sculpted a dancer (style was their choice) out of clay. The dancers went through a kiln fire are now ready to be painted. After the paint dries, the students will design clothes for the dancers using assorted fabrics.
4th Grade: The fourth graders are working on a painting project inspired by Georgia O'Keeffe. They learned about her artistic style and studied Color Theory. Then they chose a few objects (shells, flowers, etc.) and began to sketch them in their sketchbooks. They then chose their favorite object and are currently sketching it on a large 12 x 18 in. piece of paper. They will then paint their object.
5th Grade: The fifth graders are on the tail end of their unit on Egypt. The students learned about the mural painting styles of the Ancient Egyptians and then sketched their own scene using this unique method. The students viewed a video on the culture and history of Egypt and will be spending the next few weeks finishing their drawings.
The students are doing a great job this semester in art class, and I look forward to the rest of the year!

Back to Schoooooooool
Kindergarten: The Kindergartners have come back from break to continue working on their puppets. Before break, the students discussed the difference between a sculpture and a painting or drawing. They then began to create their own self-portrait puppet using modeling clay and various other materials. This past week, the students painted their puppets faces. We will be continuing work on the puppets next week.
1st Grade: This past week in 1st grade, the students worked on painting a color wheel. The students learned how to mix the secondary colors by only using the primary colors before we went on break. This past week they used this knowledge to paint a color wheel. These color wheels will be turned into clowns in the weeks to come!
2nd Grade: Before break, the 2nd graders began working on a jungle collage inspired by the artist, Henri Rousseau. We discussed what a collage was, and how to go about creating one. This past week, I demonstrated how to add bushes and leaves to the collages. We will continue working on the collages in the weeks to come.
3rd Grade: This past week the 3rd graders began working on their clay project for the year. The students learned about the artist, Edgar Degas, and viewed and discussed his work, "Little Dancer, Age 14". The students then brainstormed and sketched ideas for their own clay dancer.
4th Grade: This past week the 4th graders received their finished coil pots to take home. They participated in a critique of their work and filled out a self-assessment sheet to reflect on the work they had done.
5th Grade: The 5th graders began a new unit this past week. I showed a power point on Ancient Egyptian Art, and the students began to sketch ideas for a drawing inspired by the unique art they Egyptians did.
Pictures and more information to come!!!
